MES, QMS, ERP or LIMS: which software for which problem?

Hardly anyone comes in with a category in mind. People come with a sentence: "I can't prove my traceability in an audit", "my inventory lives in a spreadsheet", "my CAPAs get lost". These sentences do not point to the same tool, and getting the category wrong costs a whole project. Here is how to match your problem to the right family of software.

What do the regulations require?

Nothing, as far as categories go. Neither ISO 13485 nor the MDR requires an MES, a QMS, an ERP or a LIMS: the obligations concern processes, responsibilities, controls and records. The real question is therefore which need each family of software meets.

MES
Manufacturing Execution System: the software that executes and records production as it happens (protocols, actual consumption, inspections, deviations, batch records). It answers the question "what happened during this batch?". A functional market category, not a regulatory one.
QMS / eQMS
The quality management system in software form: documentation, CAPA, non-conformities, audits, training, changes, suppliers. It answers the question "how is my organization run?". Its actual scope varies widely from one product to another.
ERP
Enterprise Resource Planning: purchasing, sales, invoicing, inventory valuation, planning. It mainly covers economic and logistical processes; some industrial ERPs also handle lots, quality statuses or production functions, depending on the modules.
LIMS
Laboratory Information Management System: the software of the testing laboratory (samples, test plans, results, instruments, technical validation). It answers the question "what is the result of this test?". Here too, the scope varies from one product to another.

What should you do?

Start from your own sentence, not from the category, and treat the result as a hypothesis to investigate, not as a diagnosis. Find the wording closest to what you would naturally say.

What you sayCategory to look at first
"In an audit, I can't reconstruct a lot"MES, after checking the procedures, identifiers and interfaces already in place
"My reagent inventory lives in a spreadsheet"MES, starting with the stockroom, then production
"My procedures are out of date and my CAPAs get lost"QMS
"I don't know what I need to order"ERP
"My test results are on paper"LIMS
"A notified body raised a finding on traceability"Root cause analysis first (procedure, identifiers, configuration, interfaces), then tooling for the scope concerned

A symptom is not enough to make a diagnosis: the right-hand column gives the most frequent lead, not the only possible cause.

With Arianis

Arianis sits on the production execution side

Arianis is a specialized MES for health product manufacturers: it handles inventory, protocols, production runs, inspections, labeling and traceability. It replaces neither your ERP nor your document system; it covers the place where manufacturing records are created.

  • Configurable protocols with built-in quality controls; guided production runs, deviations justified on the spot.
  • Inventory, expiry dates and equipment metrology within the same scope; exportable batch records.
  • Labeling and UDI generated from the lot's actual data; backward and forward traceability.
  • A scope focused on production execution, with an interface designed for operators; native CSV exports for the ERP or QMS already in place.
